SB 803 Video Tipsheet

Stories inspire people. Your story can help Governor Newsom understand why it’s so important to make Peer Support Services available to behavioral health clients in Medi-Cal now! When your video is complete, please upload the video to the drop box which can be found here.

Goal:  Flood twitter with stories of why Peer Support Services matter as part of our social media campaign for Governor Newsom’s signature on SB 803.

Your role: All you need to do is capture in a BRIEF video (30 seconds or less) why Peer Support Services matter to you.

 Video Logistics

You don’t need to be a professional photographer to make a great video. Most cell phones have a video capability and can capture video that can be used on social media.

When possible, ask someone else to film you. If that isn’t possible, set a recording space for yourself (your backyard, home office, etc.) and use a tripod or even a stack of books to hold your phone up. Pre-frame the image and take test shots using your phone’s self timing feature to make sure you know where you want to stand. Then, record a video of yourself. Try to avoid holding the phone yourself as if you were taking a selfie.

Getting ready

Make sure you are in a well-lit area (or outside)

Hold your camera horizontally (or make sure to prop it up horizontally)

Use the “rule of thirds” - center yourself along one of the vertical lines as depicted below

Sharing your video

1)    If you or your organization have a twitter account, share it there

a)    ALWAYS Tag Governor Newsom @GavinNewsom (Don’t forget to add a “.” if your tag is at the beginning of your tweet (.@GavinNewsom) - otherwise fewer people will see it!

b)    ALWAYS use hashtags #SB803, #PeerSupportSpecialist and #PeersSaveLives

2)    If you or your organization do not use twitter, email your video to nikki@paschalroth.com for sharing on social media.

●      On Iphone: Your video should be saved to your “photostream.” Select the video and choose the  share icon.   Select “Mail.” The video should now appear as an attachment in your email.

●      On Android:  Your video should appear in your Gallery app. From there you can select an app to email the video.

Important: The most important thing is just to share your story.  If you have trouble with framing your video, your cat walks by, or you run into any other trouble, don’t worry!  Just send us the best you’ve got and we can edit the video if needed (see email instructions).

Tips for formulating your message

Keep it simple!

●      Answer this question: Why are you advocating for SB 803?

●      Address your message directly to Governor Newsom. Ask him to sign SB 803!

Example: I’m Esteban from Bakersfield.  People like me who’ve experienced depression and alcohol use have felt undervalued most of our lives. Being a peer support specialist means for the first time knowing what we’ve been through matters - and that we have the power to help others see their value too.  My clients have told me that having a provider that shared their experience was the most important part of their recovery journey. Governor Newsom, please sign SB 803 so California can help create more recovery stories for our Medi-Cal clients.

STORIES SHOULD BE:

●      Personal

●      Relevant

●      Impactful/Meaningful

●      Understandable

●      Short

●      Focused on the Need for Action

Most people only watch a video online for 15 seconds before moving on to something else. Think about how you can get the most information into that time frame or how you can front load the video with the most important information - the WHO and WHY.
